How to use Pace Ring

Pace Ring is a free online running metronome that helps you keep a steady rhythm. Set your cadence, choose a sound and start running. Everything works in your browser — no download or account needed.

Add Pace Ring to your Home Screen

You can add Pace Ring to your Home Screen and open it like an app, without the usual browser address bar.

iPhone (Safari): Open pacering.app, tap Share (under the More menu in some layouts), choose Add to Home Screen, turn on Open as Web App if shown, then tap Add.

Android (Chrome): Open pacering.app, tap the three-dot menu, choose Install app or Add to Home screen, and follow the prompts.

Your browser and the Home Screen app may keep separate saved settings. An internet connection is required to load Pace Ring. Adding it to your Home Screen does not guarantee background or locked-screen audio.

Set your rhythm

  1. Set your cadence. Drag the handle around the ring or tap the large number to enter a value between 140 and 220 steps per minute (SPM).
  2. Choose a sound. Tap the left button to pick Wood, Click, Soft or Sharp.
  3. Choose your step mode. Tap the right button and select Each step or Each 2nd step.
  4. Start running. Press Play and follow the beat. You can adjust your cadence while running with the + and − buttons.
  5. Stop when you’re done. Your settings stay as you left them, ready for your next run.

What is running cadence (SPM)?

Running cadence is how many steps you take in a minute, counting both feet. It’s measured in SPM — steps per minute.

Cadence tells you how often your feet touch the ground. Running pace tells you how long it takes to cover a distance.

Pace Ring offers two beat modes:

Each step: At 180 SPM, you’ll hear 180 beats per minute.

Each 2nd step: At the same 180 SPM, you’ll hear 90 beats per minute — one beat for every two steps. Your cadence setting stays the same.

You don’t need to aim for exactly 180 SPM. It’s the default setting, not a universal target. Running cadence varies from person to person and changes with speed.

Using Pace Ring on your phone

Tap Play to start the sound. If you can’t hear it, check your phone’s media volume.

The screen pulse and ring wave give you a visual rhythm alongside the sound.

Background audio depends on your phone and browser. Locking your screen, switching apps or playing music at the same time may interrupt the beat. It’s worth checking your usual setup before heading out.

Frequently asked questions

Does Pace Ring measure my cadence?

No. Pace Ring plays a rhythm for you to follow. It doesn’t count or track your steps.

Will Pace Ring remember my settings?

Yes. Your cadence, sound and step mode are saved in your browser, so you can pick up where you left off. Clearing browser data or switching browsers may reset them.

Does Pace Ring vibrate?

Vibration is optional and depends on your device and browser. It may work on some Android phones, but Safari on iPhone doesn't support it. The visual pulse works even without vibration.
